Richard Doherty, Abandoned whaling station, Deception Island, Antarctica (PLACES WILDERNESS 2025)

The huge caldera of Deception Island offers protection for ships via a tricky, narrow entrance. The shores were once the site of whaling stations with all of their ghastly mess but are now home to a few small Antarctic research stations. The black ash patches are evidence of continuing but thankfully less violent volcanic activity. Canon 5DMkIV, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L @70mm, ISO 160, f/5.6, 1/800sec
