john kinsella, CHASING THE LIGHT (PEOPLE WILDERNESS 2026)
Yosemite' s Firefall is a rare natural spectacle that only occurs with the perfect combination of water flow, light and weather in a short window each February. For a few moments the setting sun strikes Horsetail Falls at just the right angle, transforming the waterfall into what appears to be molten lava or fire cascading down the granite face of El Capitan. I had dreamed of capturing this moment for years. With so many elements needing to align, the opportunity to get the shot can be limited to a few short minutes. But this year brought an unexpected twist. A lone abseiler descended the immense granite face, seemingly securing a ringside seat to one of nature’s greatest light shows. The sight of this tiny figure against the glowing cascade created a moment even more extraordinary than I had imagined. After years of chasing the light, I finally captured the shot I had been waiting for.
