Hugh Percival, Fluorescent Bonnets (NATURE WILDERNESS 2025)
The bonnet orchid - Cryptostylis erecta - is abundant through Sydney’s bushland. Using a UV torch on a summer night, I’ve captured visible fluorescence from the flowers. This highlights their intricate morphology – a design that lures male Lissopimpla wasps who pollinate the orchid believing it to be a female of their species.
