Richard Doherty, Shackleton came this way (PEOPLE WILDERNESS 2025)
Our expedition guide scouts the way down a steep scree slope above the derelict Stromness whaling Station on South Georgia. We walked the final (and relatively easy) part of Ernest Shackleton's desperate 1916 traverse of the island in daylight but could still feel the power of the landscape and the keen edge to the weather. The achievements of those exhausted Antarctic explorers in managing the trek in bad weather and in the dark still inspire amazement and admiration.
