Bo-Huei Huang, The Volcanic Thread (PEOPLE WILDERNESS 2026)
When hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the sheer scale of the landscape quickly swallows me. I captured this moment to illustrate the stark vulnerability of the human element in the face of ancient geological forces. From the surreal red-and-black hues of the crater to the sweeping plateau, hikers are reduced to a tiny thread winding down the mountain. Navigating this slippery descent requires absolute focus, leaving no room for error between a steep valley on one side and a beautiful yet deadly volcanic landscape on the other. It is a humbling march where the breathtaking terrain demands both our awe and absolute respect.
